Are Air Fresheners Bad for Your Health?

Air fresheners are too common in usage today. The most common reason is its easy availability and its easy spray usage.  The other benefit is its long lasting effect around you. Basically the air fresheners are not meant for a strong potent smell but are being perfectly used for killing foul odors that ruins the mood so badly or even sometimes make us ill too.

But the major disadvantage with these attractive and branded air fresheners is directly hitting our health. Let’s discuss some of the major health issues that we may face with the continuous usage of these air fresheners.

Basically the air fresheners are used to mask those foul odors but they can only superimpose the odor, those smells still exist in the air and can only get subsided temporarily. It is better to find the cause of the bad smell rather than killing just the irking smell of it. You never know the extent of these smell may bring some health issues for you or for your small kids in the room.  If you neglect those foul smells which may have been coming out from any decomposed material, any dead organism like pest or rots in the home and even the long day left over food may be the cause of the growth of bacteria and fungi in the room, making you or your family ill.

Spraying air fresheners in a compact room may restrict the intake of outside air which is much better than these artificial air composed of chemicals in it. People suffering from chronic asthma or allergic to some smell may get into trouble with the continuous usage of such air fresheners.

Remember, air fresheners are composed of fragrances, aerosol propellants, and solvents like mineral oil or 2-butoxyethanol and other glycol ethers which if continuously inhaled may cause serious respiratory diseases. Thus, it is best advised to use the air fresheners in limited proportion, whenever needed and should not make a habit of continuous usage, especially in a compact room.
